Make Breakfast Better for Your Family with Nestle


Did you know that most children in the Philippines are getting less than the recommended intake of whole grains and fiber? According to the 8th National Nutrition Survey conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute, and the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST),  the whole grain consumption of different Filipino population groups, revealed that only 1 in 20 children consume whole grain. It also showed that, overall, 99% of Filipinos do not consume ≥48g of whole grain per day which is the US whole grain intake recommendation.

Good thing Nestle Philippines invited us to discuss the importance of eating a healthy breakfast and encourage families to add more whole grain to their daily nutrition for a healthier future. Nestlé staff, nutrition experts, and media explored the nutritious ingredients in KOKO KRUNCH® and prepared their own breakfast cereals.


During the talk, we learned the following points:

1. It is important to promote whole grain consumption to improve intake of Filipinos to prevent onset of nutrient deficiency. 

2. We should regulate "whole grain" and "whole grain product" definition for consumers to make informed choices.

3. Include whole grain recommendations in dietary guidelines. 

4. Encourage manufacturers to include whole grain products; government agencies to collaborate with the private sector for improved whole grain awareness. 


Whole grain also helps prevent chronic diseases because they are sources of fiber. I just learned that we should have at least 48g of whole grain each day. The benefits are having a healthier body weight, which you would less likely to gain weight; reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by up to 20-30%; and less likely to develop type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, with a risk reduction of 20-30%. 


“The 8th National Nutrition Survey clearly demonstrates the need to increase awareness amongst Filipinos on the importance of eating whole grains. It is alarming that consumption levels in the Philippines are far below recommended levels and that the vast majority of Filipinos are missing out on the benefits associated with whole grains, which include lower body weight and cholesterol levels, as well as reduced risk of diabetes and other chronic diseases,” commented Ma. Adrienne Constantino, Former Supervising Science Research Specialist of Nutritional Assessment and Monitoring Division, FNRI.
