Just How Effective is Acupuncture for Your Health?

Can acupuncture really help?
Alternative Medicines - When I was working for an HMO, we were always reminded that Acupunture and other alternative practices are not covered for those who wanted to avail of health cards. Last week, bloggers had the chance to meet Dr. Philip Nino Tan-Gatue, an acupuncturist, and made me change my mind about the practice and its benefits.

Meet the Doctor-Acupuncturist Philip Nino Tan-Gatue
Doc Phil got interested with Acupuncture when he was studying at the University of the Philippines. During his Public Health Class, he was introduced to acupuncture needles and his classmate thought he had the talent with using them. Since then, it had piqued his interest and studied acupuncture because of his migraines. And it has helped him get rid of it - 8 years and counting.

During our dinner with him, I jumped the chance to ask him if acupuncture can treat PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) since I have the illness. It's important for me to know, since my OB Gyne would always tell me that this is because of stress. I'm glad that acupuncture can help relieve them. Would you believe that he had a patient that had endometriosis and PCOS at the same time, and now, the patient would be having regular monthly periods since her sessions. Doc Phil says that acupuncture tries to restore what's normal. After our conversation, I know I must book sessions with him starting today.

According to Doc Phil's website, Acupuncture works by regulating the flow of Qi and Blood through defined pathways called "channels" or "meridians". He said that he put the needles at the acupoints that serve as dams and gates controlling the flow of Qi and Blood. So manipulations of these points are said to produce effects such as clearing blockages, promoting more flow and the like.

He said, "It is proposed that acupuncture produces its effects through regulating the nervous system, thus aiding the activity of pain-killing biochemicals such as endorphins and immune system cells at specific sites in the body. In addition, studies have shown that acupuncture may alter brain chemistry by changing the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones and, thus, affecting the parts of the central nervous system related to sensation and involuntary body functions, such as immune reactions and processes that regulate a person’s blood pressure, blood flow, and body temperature."
