Pinoy Blogfest 2.0: Social Media as an Agent of Change

Gadgets Magazine hosted the Pinoy Blogfest 2.0 last August 5 at the Activity Center, TriNoma Mall. It was an evening of informative discussion with the topic Social Media as an Agent of Change. This whole day rendezvous was supported by Coca Cola Export Company, Teletech, Canon, Globe, Pony, Neo, Asus, Western Digital, Archos,  BenQ, JBL, Sennheiser, Manila Bulletin, Business Mirror.

I got the chance to be with my blogger friends again during the Bloggers BIO (By Invitation Only), the evening part of the Blogfest 2.0. I was so enthusiastic when I saw the list of speakers because they are mostly reknowned in the blogging and media industry.

Usec. Manolo L. Quezon III is from the Presidential Communications and Strategic Planning Office. He reiterated that the social media is one form of freedom - that is, to express oneself. He also said that change is constant and we are the agents of change. I also believed when he pointed out that the new media changed life for the better. As agents of change, he urges us to visit http://www.malacanang.gov.ph/ to be informed and give back the information we know to our government.

Famous for spearheading Rock Ed, an alternative education volunteer  group that works for a more interesting way of presenting socio-civic issues to the youth. As a media person for so many years now, she showed how social media has evolved from chatrooms to social networking sites. She also encouraged bloggers to write more, as we are like historians in our own way.

Ms. Allie Cook is from Kiva. She introduced how social media can change people's lives when information goes both ways. They are currently servicing 59 countries on 5 continents as lenders to those who need the financing the most. That way, they other people can help while making a difference in one individual or family. You may visit their website, http://www.kiva.org/ for more details.

As a partner of Gadgets Magazine, the Coca Cola Export Corp. pushes their "Live Positively" campaign to the country. This campaign aims to make a positive difference to the world like going green, recycling, energy saving and the like. Mr. Walter Panganiban, from Coca Cola's CSR Group provides us with their special projects and informed us of the challenges that we are yet to overcome.

Gadgets Magazine and Coca Cola also introduced the GoodBlog Awards. Entries from bloggers around the Philippines can join. Their theme is entitled "Spark and Share", which shows transformations of ordinary individuals doing extraordinary things. Three different categories such as Text Blog, Photo Blog or Video Blog are allowed and must be published within 2011.

The GoodBlog Awards will commence on September 2011 and will be awarded on 2012. You may visit http://www.goodblogaward.com/ for more details.

We were also serenaded by Mr. Noel Cabangon during dinner. It was indeed a successful affair with all things good in it. Many thanks to Gadgets Magazine for the invite to this meaningful event. I hope there are lots of these programs to come in the future.
